Basis of Credit Transfer on Entry (UG)

For students admitted in the 2021-22 intake or before

UG
Examination Results

For students admitted to HKUST based on the following examination attainments, 9 Block Credits of University Common Core, including 3 credits each for Humanities, Social Analysis, and Science and Technology (non-School-Sponsored Courses), will be granted automatically.

▪  International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)
▪  General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCEAL)
▪  Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE)

Moreover, credits will also be granted to students with specific examination subjects which have been assessed and recorded in the Credit Transfer Database (For Examinations). Application is NOT required for these credits as long as the examination results are disclosed to and verified by the University no later than one month after the commencement of the first regular term of study at HKUST.

Apart from the above examinations, credits are also granted to other Public Examination results, such as AISSCE, AP, IAL, etc. with reference to the records in the Credit Transfer Database (For Examinations). Application is NOT required as long as the examination results are disclosed to and verified by the University no later than one month after the commencement of the first regular term of study at HKUST.

For examinations and subjects not found from the database, students may raise new mapping requests, with detailed course syllabus, by sending email to the Credit Transfer Team, ARO no later than one month after the commencement of the first regular term of study at HKUST.

For students with block transfer of 9 University Common Core credits, their other credits transferred on entry cannot be used as required or elective credits to fulfill the University Common Core requirements in the following areas: Humanities (H), Social Analysis (SA), Science and Technology (S&T), Quantitative Reasoning (QR) and Arts. 
The maximum number of entry credits can be transferred on this basis is 30.

Language Proficiency

Exemption for English Language Courses

Students who have attained the required level of English language proficiency are eligible for credit transfer if the information has been presented to the University for admission purpose. The transfer of credits is automatic and application is NOT required. The records of credit transfer can be viewed at the Student Services Center in SIS. Exemption for Chinese Language Courses

Students who have attained the required level of Chinese language proficiency are eligible for credit transfer if the information has been presented to the University for admission purpose and passed the Assessment of Communicative Competence in Putonghua. The transfer of credits is automatic and application is NOT required (the Centre for Language Education will inform the Academic Registry, upon students' fulfillment of both requirements). The records of credit transfer can be viewed at the Student Services Center in SIS.

Local Post-secondary Awards

For students admitted to HKUST based on local Post-secondary Awards, such as Local Associate Degrees or Local Higher Diplomas, 21 Block credits will be granted automatically including 9 credits of University Common Core (3 credits each for Humanities, Social Analysis, and Science and Technology (non-School-Sponsored Courses)) and 12 unassigned free credits. Application is NOT required for these credits.

Students may also apply for credit transfer with courses completed in the post-secondary programs via the online Credit Transfer Application System no later than one month after the commencement of the first regular term of study at HKUST. The mappings approved are available at the Credit Transfer Database (For Institutional Courses), students may also raise new course equivalence mappings, with detailed course syllabus, via the system.

For students with block transfer of 9 University Common Core credits, their other credits transferred on entry cannot be used as required or elective credits to fulfill the University Common Core requirements in the following areas: Humanities (H), Social Analysis (SA), Science and Technology (S&T), Quantitative Reasoning (QR) and Arts. 
The maximum number of entry credits can be transferred on this basis is 60.

HKUST Credits Taken Prior to Admission

For students who have taken HKUST courses prior to admission to an undergraduate program at HKUST, credits will be transferred to the undergraduate study automatically and application is NOT required. Some examples are as follow:

▪  HKUST Summer Institute
▪  Hong Kong Virtual University

▪  Enhancement /Talented Programs
▪  Exchange-in programs

These credits will be included in the calculation of grade averages (with full weight). If you decided not to transfer these credits, please send a request in email to us for cancellation within your first term of UG study at HKUST.

Courses Taken in Other Institutions

Students can also apply for credit transfer with courses completed at local or/and overseas tertiary institutions via the online Credit Transfer Application System. Before initiating any application, students are strongly advised to check the approved mappings from the Credit Transfer Database (For Institutional Courses), and consult their School or major Department for advice on equivalence HKUST course.
