Thetos Distinguished Teaching Award

The Thetos Distinguished Teaching Award (TDTA) is established by Thetos Foundation Hong Kong to encourage teaching-track faculty at the University to strive for their teaching excellence and to support their teaching advancement project and personal development. The Award Scheme is established and scrutinised by the Office of the Provost.

Thetos Foundation is a Christian faith-based grant-making foundation in Hong Kong. The Foundation devotes to empowering and encouraging its beneficiaries with grants as an endorsement of their deeds.

The Thetos Distinguished Teaching Award aims to support and encourage the development of outstanding teaching-track faculty at HKUST, and to foster a culture of teaching excellence that will benefit generations of students to come.

There will be two types of awards under the TDTA.

a) Distinguished Teaching Award/Early Career Distinguished Teaching Award

• Up to two Awards to be selected annually. Each of the Awards will be named as “Thetos Distinguished Teaching Award”, in Chinese, 「賦勵傑出教學獎」.
• If an Awardee does not have more than six years of university teaching experience at the University as of the closing date for nomination, the Award will be named as “Thetos Early Career Distinguished Teaching Award”, in Chinese, 「賦勵新晉教學人員傑出教學獎」.
• Each Awardee will receive a cash prize of HK$25,000 in recognition of his/her teaching excellence and a project fund of HK$150,000 to support his/her teaching advancement project(s), as well as supporting the personal development initiative(s) related to his/her teaching area(s), details of such projects and/or initiatives to be submitted at the time of nomination and considered by the Selection Committee.

b) Teaching Award Honorable Mention/Early Career Teaching Award Honorable Mention

• Up to four Awards to be selected annually. Each of the Awards will be named “Thetos Teaching Award Honorable Mention”, in Chinese, 「賦勵教學人員傑出榮譽獎」.
• If an Awardee does not have more than six years of teaching experience at the University as at the closing date for nomination, the Award will be named as “Thetos Early Career Teaching Award Honorable Mention”, in Chinese, 「賦勵新晉教學人員傑出榮譽獎」.
• Each Honorable Mention Awardee will receive a certificate in recognition of his/her Teaching Excellence.

The eligibility for the TDTA is as follows:

• Nominees must be full-time teaching track faculty members in employment terms such as Lecturer II, Lecturer I, and Senior Lecturer.
• They must have held an appointment at the University for not less than two years as at the closing date for nomination.

• For holders of complimentary titles like “Assistant/Associate Professors in [specific field] Education,” nominees as at the closing date for nomination of TDTA should have not less than one year since the offer of such title.
